Moving Checklist

 

As soon as you know that you are moving:

  • Discard linens, clothing, and other household items that are too worn to move.
  • Schedule a garage sale or charity donation for usable items that you don't want to move.
  • Make hotel reservations for the move.
  • Have your automobile serviced with the new climate in mind. Check the tires.
  • Use up supplies in the pantry and freezer.
  • Decide if you are driving or shipping your car(s).
  • Use up gasoline, solvents, cleaning fluids, propane, aerosols, and nail polish. None of these items can be safely transported.
  • Use a floor plan of your new home to place your furniture.
  • Decide if surplus items will be stored at either end of your move, and arrange for a storage facility.
  • Update your homeowner's or renter's insurance, and remember to include items that will be stored.
  • Decide if you need a safety deposit box and a Post Office box at your destination, and make arrangements.
  • Decide how your pets will be transported to your destination.
  • Update your address book of friends and relatives.
  • Study company relocation policy to see what expenses are covered and which vendors are approved.
  • Take pictures of your possessions for a home inventory.

Two months before moving:

  • Get estimates from moving companies for packing and transportation or,
  • Get costs from two truck rental companies and,
  • Estimate the number of boxes and other supplies you will need (if not provided by your mover).
  • Confirm type of payment (cash, personal check, or maybe a credit card?) with the mover.
  • Decide if you will rent or buy your new home.
  • Schedule a home-buying trip or make arrangements to secure an apartment.
  • Decide if you will need temporary housing.
  • Explore your new community on the web.
  • Update appraisals on any valuable items that will need additional insurance.

Four to six weeks before moving:

  • Schedule the disconnection of all utilities. Leave the utilities on at your old residence until the day after your move.
  • Arrange for connection of utilities at your destination for the day before your arrival.
  • Be sure to allow for a final trash pick-up after your moving truck has left.
  • Ask for referrals from your doctor and dentist and collect your medical records.
  • If you are packing yourself, begin the process of packing up non-essential items.
  • Label all packed boxes and collect them in a spare room or in the garage.
  • Update your Emergency Road Service if you will be driving to your new destination.
  • Assemble maps and plan your route.
  • If you will be making a house hunting trip to your destination, consider transferring the contents of your Safety Deposit Box during that trip.
  • Arrange for childcare on moving day.
  • Arrange for a new bank account at your destination, if needed.

Three weeks before moving:

  • Hold your moving sale.
  • Pick up your Change of Address Kit at the Post Office.
  • Send change of address information to:
    • Accountant.
    • Credit card companies.
    • Magazines and other periodicals.
    • Video, DVD and other media subscriptions.
    • Your car dealer, if your car is still under warranty.
    • Lawyer.
    • Brokerage house or investment firm.
    • Your current employer's 401-K administrator (for rollover information).
    • Your current employer's HR Department (for W-2 forms at year end).
    • Alumni associations.
  • Give notice to:
    • Health club.
    • Church or Synagogue.
    • Book club.
    • Volunteer and service organizations.
    • Condominium or homeowners association.
    • Cancel newspaper subscription.
    • Return all library books.
  • Cancel lawn service
    • Cancel pest control/extermination service.
    • Cancel diaper service.
  • Cancel milk/bottled water delivery

Two weeks before the move:

  • Collect instructions and warranties for all appliances and items that will be left behind for the new owners.
  • Schedule the post-move cleaning service, and arrange for access with a neighbor if you won't be there to let the cleaners in.
  • Clean out the trunk of your car so that it is ready to accept suitcases and boxes of special documents.
  • Schedule pick-up for items that you were unable to sell or dispose of.
  • Give away houseplants that you will not be taking with you in the car.

In the final week before the move:

  • Pick up all laundry and dry cleaning.
  • Perform final yard work and drain all power equipment of oil and gas.
  • Check the attic, garage and crawl space for items that may have been overlooked.
  • Back up important computer files .
  • Return all rented videos.
  • Return digital or set-top boxes to the cable company, if required by your contract.
  • Return leased DSL or high-speed cable modems, if required by your contract.
  • Empty your safe deposit box, and pack those items in the box that will accompany you.
  • Prepare the"load last, unload first"box .
  • Designate a spot in the kitchen to leave the keys, garage door openers, and warranty folder for the new owners or tenants

After the move:

  • Change locks on all doors.
  • Change the oil in the car.
  • Check with the sanitation department to see if you can recycle your moving boxes.
  • Update your driver's license.
  • Register your car.
  • Change your voter registration.
  • Get license tags for pets, if required in your new community.
  • Install new batteries in all security devices; smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Notify friends of new e-mail address.
  • Send new e-mail address to e-mail lists, e-zines, and digital newsletters.

Some things that should NOT be packed:

  • Valuable jewelry.
  • Furs.
  • Irreplaceable photos.
  • Coin or stamp collections.

Things to keep with you during the move:

  • If you are traveling by car, keep these items in a single box or two that can be brought into your hotel room each night during transit.
  • If you are flying, pack them in a carry on bag, and lock it after you have cleared security.
  • Automobile ownership records.
  • Insurance policies.
  • Medical records.
  • Prescriptions.
  • Two week supply of medication.
  • Birth certificates.
  • Passports.
  • Employment records.
  • Most recent tax returns.
  • Social security cards and records.
  • School and immunization records.
  • Spare car keys and house keys for your new home.
  • All credit cards.
  • Checkbooks for all accounts.
  • Chargers for cell phone and other electronic equipment.
  • Personal phone book or electronic organizer.
  • Files with all pertinent information about your destination that you will be using during the first few weeks of your arrival.
    • Employer's address and telephone number.
    • Apartment or new home address.
    • Local city map.
    • Addresses of schools and recreation facilities (YMCA, health club, parks, etc.).
  • A folder for all your move-related travel expenses, including fuel, lodging, and meals.

Things to put in the “Load Last, Unload First” box:

  • This box can travel in the moving truck, but should be the first box out, since it will help you begin to set up your new home as the rest of your belongings are coming off the truck.
  • Linens for as many beds as you will be using on your first night.
  • Small toolkit with hammer, pliers, screw drivers.
  • Scissors and box cutters.
  • Large trash bags.
  • Toilet paper and soap.
  • Paper towels.
  • Light bulbs.
  • Extension cords.
  • First aid supplies.
  • Paper cups, plates, and napkins.
  • Pre-moistened hand towels and cleaning cloths.
  • Aspirin and bottled water.
